Mission & Adoption philosophy

Border Animal Mission (BAM) rescues at-risk dogs and cats from high-kill facilities along the Texas-Mexico border and rehabilitates, transports, and rehomes them. Our adoption process matches each animal’s temperament, medical history, and behavioral profile with an environment where they can thrive long-term.

applicant requirements

  • Age: Applicants must be at least 21 years of age.
  • ID & Residency: Applicants must provide a valid state-issued photo ID and proof of current address.
  • Housing Approval: Renters must provide written landlord approval or copy of lease agreements showing pet permission and breed/weight allowances. Homeowners must verify homeownership status.
  • Existing Pet Protocol: All existing household pets must be up to date on core vaccinations (Rabies, DHPP/FVRCP) and monthly heartworm preventative, as verified by a veterinary check.

Application & SCREENING PROCESS

  • Application Review: Completed written applications undergo reference checks (personal and veterinary) and housing verification.
  • Decompression Protocol: Adopters are educated on and agree to observe our strict 3-Day/3-Week/3-Month decompression framework to allow incoming border rescues to successfully adjust to new environments.
  • Home Checks: BAM reserves the right to conduct virtual or in-person home safety evaluations prior to adoption finalization.
