Meet Jesse Halprin, president of Border Animal Mission, Inc. Jesse & her husband, Chris, met in college in Florida. While they were dating, they stumbled upon an abandoned kitten in a dumpster of Jesse's apartment complex. After waiting to see if the kitten's mother would return, they decided to adopt her and name her Luna. Little did they know, this would lead to them adopting a rescue cat Phoebe, a three-legged rescue dog Judy, a foster fail cat Bob, and then a stray rescue cat Cleo.
After getting married and moving to Del Rio, Texas, for Chris' Air Force pilot career, they decided to start fostering rescue animals. Del Rio is currently facing a major animal overpopulation crisis. Backyard breeding, dumping unwanted dogs/cats or entire litters of puppies/kittens, medical emergencies and behavioral problems due to neglect or abuse, and feral dog and cat colonies spreading deadly diseases are some of the constant issues we face in this community.
After about a year of fostering animals, we decided to start Border Animal Mission, Inc. (BAM). BAM is a Florida based non-profit organization supporting the overpopulation crisis in our small border town, Del Rio. We have two objectives: 1. To foster and provide adoption resources to the Del Rio animals to get them off the streets and into loving homes. 2. Spay/neuter and vaccinate the strays of Del Rio to help with population and disease control.
BAM spays/neuters all of the foster animals who come through our program. In addition, BAM works with the local community to provide TNR (Trap, Neuter, Release) services to the stray population.
BAM provides full basic veterinary care to all of our foster animals. This includes testing & providing vaccinations against common diseases, testing for worms/parasites, providing flea/tick treatment or preventatives, rabies vaccinations, spay/neuter and microchipping. In addition, BAM can assist with emergency medical cases
BAM manages multiple foster families who provide a loving space and typical household atmosphere that will prepare our foster animals for a future adoption. We provide a quiet decompression space and slowly integrate them into a "normal" pet lifestyle so they have the best opportunity at a future successful adoption!
